At least, this is one of the buildings in my University. Uni Bern is a sprawling place that expands out all over this area of the city--I'll probably have to take a bus to get between two of my classes, once classes actually start.
Kirksville Missouri doesn't have buses. Or trains. I think I might have seen a taxi...once.
The University of Bern is pretty cool. It was founded in 1528 as a minsters' college. It then turned into an academy for the upper class in 1834. To put this in perspective: Kirksville Missouri wasn't founded until 1841. My current university is older than my old town.
Talk about a sense of time.
Currently I'm only taking one course at the University--a German language integration course that the Uni offers for exchange students. Through this course, I've met an absolutely marvelous group of students from literally all over the world (between the 13 of us, we represent four continents). Most of my days so far are spent running around with the other exchange students. It's a fun feeling of commraderie, like we're all Superheroes on a mission to infiltrate an alien planet. Our superpowers include:
- Not speaking the local language
- Trying to swear in Finnish
- Making pasta
- Making the British kid say "Harry Potter" over and over and
- Buying inordinately cheap bottles of wine.
Currently, I am working towards degrees in English and Education, with potentially a minor in German. From what I've seen, Uni Bern is mostly a school for science, law, and economics. When I tell people which degrees I'm pursuing, I get the strangest looks...
Fortunately for me, the German word for my degree actually makes it sound like a legitimate field of study: "Literaturwissenschaften." Literature Sciences.
What are you studying?
English.
*Cough* Well, um, that's nice...I guess...(if you want to work at Starbucks...)
What are you studying?
Literature sciences.
Wow! Really? I don't know much about that, but it sounds hard!
Uni Bern so far has been a great place to study (it both gave me chocolate and paid for my excursion to a chocolate factory). I can't wait to see what classes are like when they actually start!
